tightwad challenge

So I’ve been reading this book called The Tightwad Gazette and it is
all about how to live off of one income when trying to raise small children.
It is pretty interesting and one thing she talks about is how much money is
wasted on food. So, while the bean and her dad are napping I did an inventory of all the food I have in the cupboards and then plan on not buying anymore such stuff (i.e. only buying fresh foods) until I use up the stuff in my cupboards. So, here is what I found that is scary (this is ONLY my multiples):

5 boxes of Zatarains Black Beans and Rice Mix *
4 boxes of Zatarains Jambalaya Mix *
5 boxes of Zatarains Chicken Creole Rice Mix *
3 boxes of Zatarains Dirty Rice *
2 boxes of Near East Cous Cous **
3 boxes of Lentil Pilaf ***
6 cans of organic condensed cream of chicken soup ****
6 cans crushed tomatoes
2 cans of green beans *****

* I went through a phase where I made these for my lunches at school when
on Weight Watchers and apparently I bought a lot of them.
** Neither C. or I ever cook Cous Cous (any ideas?)
*** Lentil Pilaf?? What the hell was I thinking?
**** Casseroles are ever so popular in the south and the regular condensed
has trans-fats which I gave up a year ago.
***** How disgusting are canned green beans? I guess we are making a
traditional southern green bean casserole this week.

Now, here is the bizarre stuff:

1. Soba and udon noodles bought from a Japanese store in new york in 2000
2. No bake lasagne noodles???? No clue as to what I was thinking.
3. Craisins half-used bag (when did I use dried cranberries??)
4. Low-fat almond butter.

So, the handyman has agreed and we are going to do the Tightwad Challenge for a
month and clear out the cupboards. We may be crazy by the end.

Oh, and one of my favorite Tightwad suggestions was to eat less!

  • I know this blog article is outdated by now but I’m curious if you accomplished your goal of clearing out the cupboard before buying more? I do this periodically myself and feel so much better afterwards!! Congratulations on trying to make good use of your money!!! Did you ever find a use for your Couscous? We eat it occasionally plain as a side dish instead of potatoes or rice. I’ve also made a casserole with the leftovers. Couscous, veggies of choice, meat of choice (optional), and a condensed cream of “something” soup. Maybe a little cheese on top.

I like your blog! We are a family of 3 boys, 1 dog, 6 cats, 3 chickens and our own handyman husband/farmer/mechanic!! I’ll enjoy reading your blog in the future, I’m sure!

  • I did! Also I am really good now about making a grocery list before I leave so I don’t buy a six bottle of Tamari but forget tomato paste :)

  • Good for you!!! Now, if I could only remember to take my reusable grocery bags into the store every time!!! LOL!

  • Make your own “cream soup” to use in oven casseroles by mixing 1T cornstarch to 1 C milk. I shake it up in any closed container, poor it into a pyrex and microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid lumps, as it thickens If the recipe is cooking on the stove just pour the mixture in with your other stuff; no need to microwave. Yes, you can just cook the mixture in a saucepan on the stove too. It is on the side of the cornstarch box… called white sauce. Flavor it any way you like. I often add chicken base. This substitution also really cuts down on the sodium in any recipe.

  • Wow, thanks for the tip. I don’t even really like condensed soup and have tried substituting other things (like cream cheese) but so rich!
